Welcome to Charing Cricket Club
The old cricket club at Charing stopped playing in 1996, but now a new club inherits an historic cricketing tradition epitomised by a remarkable cricketing action photograph found in the pavilion. It shows a match dated 1864 at Charing packed with spectators framed by the North Downs. Elsewhere there is reference to a Charing Cricket team playing near Canterbury on Tuesday 28th June 1768, close to the beginning of organised cricket.

To maintain that heritage Kevin Walters and Bob Cook, both determined to see cricket back at Charing, called the first meeting of the new club on 17th November 2005, those present unanimously agreed to join the club and play at the Arthur Baker Playing Field.

We now have a management committee, a full fixture list and some 30 villagers available to play. The ground is pleasantly situated close to the High Street with views of the North Downs, the local Windmill and village Church. There are ample changing facilities, a bar and large function room in the pavilion.

Non playing membership is available at £10 per annum. Everybody is welcome to come and watch the matches during sunny summer days. We are always looking for new players and anyone interested please contact the secretary or a committee member.

Umpires and Scorers Wanted
Now that we have a much fuller fixtures schedule, we desperately need Umpires and Scorers for both Home an Away matches on a regular basis, we already have a couple of volunteers, but we need more. If you think you can help then give Dave Riley a call on 01233 660230.
Message from the Chairman
This season we have games against local villages on Saturday’s, 20/20 evening matches in June into July and a leap forward for the club, Sunday League matches in the Kent Village League, the first being away to Elham Valley, 2.30 pm Sunday 18th May.
So this year still very much enjoy your cricket, but with an added competitive edge. The advancement of the club means we have to step up our performances both on and off the pitch.
Bowlers think about aiming at and outside the off stump and pitch it up, short legside bowling is batsmen’s food and drink, particularly in the league.
Batsman should concentrate on building an innings, playing forward to balls pitched up and back to short pitched balls and remember play straight unless the ball is a long hop or wide of the wicket. Why, when waiting all week for a knock, get out early. The onus this year is for both you and the club to make runs!
Fielding, now you can win or loose in the field. Go to where your captain places you and stay there, watch the play at all times, be aware of what is happening, your captain may wish to move you round, in or out. If the balls coming your way get your body behind it and if a catch is on the way never take your eye off it.
Play to win and that means playing smart, but do not dispute umpires decisions, do not show dissent or bad temper and do not swear loudly in the pavilion or on the field of play, remember there could be spectators or children nearby they don’t need to hear a foulmouthed outburst. If you need to swear keep it quiet!
On match days arrive at least 15 minutes before play begins, preferably longer, also you will probably be needed at home games to assist in putting boundary markers out and erecting the scoreboard.
Study the laws of cricket and familiarise yourself with scoring, you may have to umpire or score. We need both, do you know anybody?
Remember £10 subscription is due at the start of the season.
Cricket teas are a great break from the cricket on a summer’s day, the club may ask you to assist with them, tea and tea persons are the backbone of any club!
Enjoy being part of a team and hopefully a winning team.
Be aware that under 18 year olds need to have protection on and off the field of play, they must wear helmets when batting or wicket keeping, they must have their parents knowledge of where they are and their support.
Finally, Ardo & the Spices of Bengal have financially assisted the club, we have matches against them, either play in or come and support these matches as a thank you to both of them.

Come and Support
We would like to encourage people to come along and support your local cricket team, so why not sign up as a non-playing members this season, it's quite in-expensive and allows you to enjoy the facilities and support your local side, at the same time can we remind all current non-playing member to renew their membership.
